Christopher Williams 150th Birthday Celebrations

This January and throughout 2023, we will be celebrating the birth of Christopher Williams, the famous artist from Maesteg, 150 years ago. The photograph of Christopher Williams was taken in the early 1900s by John Francis Lloyd.

Christopher Williams was born on the 7th January 1873, on Commercial Street in Maesteg. Despite his father’s wishes for him to become a doctor, young Christopher insisted on becoming an artist, and he worked hard to achieve his dream.

Williams would become one of Wales’s finest artists, showing his work in the Royal Academy in London, painting the portrait of many important (Welsh) figures including David Lloyd George, and he was commissioned to paint the Investiture of the Prince of Wales in Caernarfon in 1911.

Find out more about famous local artist Christopher Williams in the display at Maesteg Library. The display includes some of Christopher’s own thoughts about growing up in Maesteg, and there are some prints of Williams’s paintings. Free hot drinks are provided as part of the library’s Warm Welcome.
