Staff’s Pick of the Month

An open book.

Choosing your next read can be tough, so we’re asking Awen Libraries staff to recommend a book every month to help you pick yours. This month, we asked Julie and Rhiannon what books have inspired them the most.

Julie said: “A favourite book of mine that I recommend is Daisy Jones and The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid. Daisy Jones’ sun glassed gaze had followed me round the libraries from the cover of this book for quite some time before I gave in and started to read it. From the moment I read the first line I was hooked! The story gives off massive Fleetwood Mac vibes, while creating a whole new global sensation. The characters are flawed but amazing; the way the relationships are depicted is real, raw, heart-breaking and tender. This type of ‘interview’ narration doesn’t always work for me – but this – this was perfection. Taylor Jenkins Reid weaves the interplay between characters perfectly and it was all I could do not to twirl around like Stevie Nicks while reading. This novel was so, so good that despite completely approving of the casting choices – I’m too scared to watch the series based on the books.”

Rhiannon said: “I have lots of favourite books for lots of different reasons, but if I had to pick one, I’d say Charles Dickens – A Christmas Carol. I was quite young when I read this for the first time, and I remember feeling the atmosphere change in the room and thinking “Wow! I didn’t know a book could do that!”
