Green Libraries Week 2024

All

From 7th to 13th October, we are joining with colleagues across the UK to celebrate Green Libraries Week.

Did you know…

  • In 2023-24, over 361,000 items were borrowed, returned and borrowed again from Awen Libraries, including books, DVDs, iPads and even footballs. That’s a lot of reuse!
  • We are replacing our current diesel delivery van with an electric vehicle, as we do our bit to help Wales achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050.
  • Our refurbishment of Betws Library (October – February) will include the installation of LED lighting and a battery to store surplus electricity from our existing array of solar panels.
  • Any books we no longer use are either sent to Arts Factory – a social enterprise in Ferndale – for resale, donated to children in Africa or sent for recycling.
  • We manage the Books 4U service in South Wales. If we haven’t got the book you want, we can borrow it from another library; reducing the need for multiple copies and reducing paper.
  • We are working hard to replace the non-biodegradable prizes used during the Summer Reading Challenge with eco-friendly versions, to reduce the amount of single-use plastic.
  • We are reducing the amount of new craft materials we use for by running activities using recyclable materials, such as junk modelling and flowers from old book pages.
