Born in Commercial Street, Maesteg, on 7 January 1873, we will celebrate renowned artist Christopher Williams throughout 2023. Williams painted royalty as well as the famous Battle of Mametz Wood, but there is one painting that is not very well known: ‘Maesteg Iron Works’.

This painting was kindly donated to us by a relative of Williams and shows the remains of the Iron Works furnace around 1900. The painting will be displayed in Maesteg Town Hall when it reopens to the public, but the painting requires restoration work before it can go on display. We were thrilled to receive a £5000 donation from the Pilgrim Trust towards the restoration. We are now fundraising to meet the total £10,000 restoration cost.
