This February, we are supporting Welsh Government’s Safer Internet Month. We’ve put together some tips to help you stay safe online.
Use strong and unique passwords
A strong password including a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers and special characters, acts as the first line of defence against cybercriminals. The National Cyber Security Centre recommends using three random words for a strong and memorable password.
Enable Two-Factor Authentication
Two-factor authentication adds an extra layer of security by asking you to provide a second form of verification, such a code sent to your mobile device or a fingerprint scan, as well as your password. This makes it hard for cybercriminals to access your accounts, even if they have your password.
Be Vigilant of Phishing Scams
Cybercriminals use sophisticated phishing emails and fake websites to try and trick individuals into revealing their personal information. Be wary of emails asking for sensitive data or containing suspicious looking links to click or attachments to download. Verify who sent the email first.
Stay Safe on Social Media
Use the security and privacy settings on your social media accounts to control who can see your posts and personal information. Don’t post personal details online and Think before you check-in at a location or say you’re going on holiday. Someone you don’t know could see your post and realise your home is empty.
Educate Children and Young Users
Parents, carers and guardians should teach children and young people how to stay safe online, including the risks around texting, social media, video games, inappropriate photography, cyber-bullying and reporting suspicious online behaviour. Set up parental controls where necessary.
Keep Your Devices and Software Up-to-date
Enable automatic updates on your devices and browsers and install antivirus software to stay protected from the latest threats. Regular updates ensure that security patches are applied to reduce the risk of data breaches, malware and unauthorised access from cybercriminals.
